How powerful should my gas sauna heater be?

The heater must be of sufficient size and power to effectively heat the space, but not so large that it will directly heat the air and leave the sauna stones and benches cold. The heat capacity of a gas sauna heater is usually measured in British thermal units, BTUs. However, most manufacturers will clearly state the amount of space that each of their models can heat efficiently.

Tips for use

  • In most cases, you will need a gas stove that can heat around 2500 BTU per cubic meter (m³) in your sauna. If you are building your sauna outdoors, especially in a cold climate, you may want to add another couple of thousand BTUs to compensate for the extra heat loss.
