Different types of panel

An important consideration when choosing an infrared sauna is the heater itself. Different materials are better at radiating infrared waves than others. The two common types of FIR panels are carbon fiber and ceramic.

There is a lot of conflicting information about these two types of heaters, but most sources agree that you get a cheap option no matter which one you choose. However, there is a wide range of quality of panels so look for well-known and proven brands for a quality and durable product.

Carbon fiber heaters are more expensive but in theory can also be very effective, provided you buy the right technology. These panels normally emit radiation over a larger surface area and are colder to the touch. The larger panels used by carbon fiber heaters are said to provide a more even distribution of heat. Poor quality carbon fiber heaters are often made up of a thin layer of carbon fiber that is dressed over a piece of plastic. High quality carbon fiber heaters (with greater than 80-90% conversion of energy to IR emissions) tend to be significantly more expensive.

Ceramic heaters are usually much cheaper and come in a range of types and styles that vary greatly in terms of their efficiency. Ceramic heaters typically produce a more intense heat than carbon fiber IR in a smaller area and heat up much faster. Different types of ceramic heaters can produce very different results based on their efficiency.
